The experience
Follow a route from frankincense country to caravan heritage and open dunes, ending the desert portion as the evening light moves across Rub Al Khali.
Leaving Salalah, the 4WD travels north across Dhofar towards Wadi Dawkah. Here, frankincense trees give a living context to the resin traded through the region. Continue towards Shisr, also called Wubar or Ubar, an archaeological caravan site associated with the stories of the Lost City of the Sands. Your guide connects the surviving remains with the desert trade routes; the legendary city story and the visible archaeology are distinct parts of the visit.
Beyond the settlements, the journey reaches the Omani edge of the Empty Quarter. Leave the road for the agreed sand-driving section, then stop among the dunes for photographs and time on foot. Near sunset, ridgelines cast longer shadows and the sand changes colour with the light. After this stop, return to Salalah the same evening. The approximately eight-hour outing includes substantial driving, and the departure is arranged around sunset for your date; meals and site admission are separate unless specified.
