A good session begins by orienting yourself with the unaided eye: recognising the brighter stars, tracing constellations and understanding where the Moon or visible planets sit in the sky. Telescope viewing then brings selected objects closer, with the targets chosen by the guide rather than a fixed promise of planets that may not be visible that night. Cloud, haze and moonlight affect what can be seen.
