The experience
Spend a full day tracing Alexandria’s layers, from Roman-era burial chambers and the Serapeum setting to old neighbourhoods and the gardens of Montaza.
Kom El Shoqafa introduces the city’s mixed cultural traditions through its underground funerary architecture. A stop around the monument known as Pompey’s Pillar adds the Serapeum landscape to the story; the monument’s familiar name should not be mistaken for the tomb of Pompey. Continue through the library district and the old-city areas selected for your walk, with public viewpoints and any religious-site access arranged around opening and services.
At Qaitbay, pause outside the sea-facing fortress before following the coast east towards Montaza. Garden paths, mature trees and the palace setting offer a different side of the city from the archaeological stops; palace interior access is not part of this proposal. Return along the Corniche, with a Stanley Bridge photo stop where traffic and safe stopping permit. Allow about seven to eight hours for the longer city circuit, with lunch and admission itemised separately rather than assuming every museum is included.
